Normal blood sugar levels should fall below 99 mg/dL after an overnight fast (not eating). Prediabetes is defined by a lab results of a fasting blood sugar level between 100 and 125 mg/dL and diabetes is defined by a fasting blood sugar of 126 mg/dL or higher.

What to do if you are diagnosed with prediabetes?

Healthy lifestyle choices can help stop the progression of prediabetes to diabetes and for some can help bring blood sugar levels back to normal, thus avoiding potential complications of diabetes. Here are a few recommendations:

  • Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains and olive oil. Choose foods low in fat and calories and high in fiber.

  • Physical activity burns sugar for energy and helps the body use insulin more effectively. Try to exercise 3-4 times per week (total of 2 - 2.5 hours), including a combination of light, moderate, and vigorous exercise.

  • Weight loss of just 5 - 7% of your body weight can significantly reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

  • Stopping smoking can improve the way insulin works, improving your blood sugar level.

  • Take medications (if needed) if you're at high risk of diabetes. Discuss with your healthcare provider.


Complications of diabetes can include: heart disease, chronic kidney disease, nerve damage, and other problems with feet, oral health, vision, hearing, and mental health. (CDC.gov)
